MIRROR GRINDING MACHINE. I made my first mirror grinding and polishing machine over thirty years ago. It used the working principle of the machine illustrated at "A" Fig.3, Page 163, "Amateur Telescope Making" Book 1. A bowl which rotated was fitted to the spindle. I also built another machine of the same type.

Anyway, it's amazing the precision you can achieve simply with some glass, grit, pine pitch and a lot of work. I've heard that this is literally the highest amount of precision a human can achieve with simple hand tools! Just grinding the telescope mirror probably took 80-100 hours for me, but I was learning a lot and taking my time.

If I had known as a kid how, well not easy, but indeed not as hard as I would have expected to grind my own mirror.
It is a fine-looking, near full-thickness, 10 inch diameter blank that I intend to grind and polish into a 1st class telescope mirror. Here is a stack of my home-made 8 and 10 inch mirror blanks. Grinding the secondary is just like grinding any other optic except in minature. I ground the secondary with the workstand and worked the tool on top just like I would grind a larger mirror. This optic is small enough that a lens grinding machine could work well.
